Check for a permanent place of business, telephone number, VAT number, Company registration number, website address etc.
Make sure they have sufficient liability insurance, and an up to date Workmans Compensation certificate.
Look for an established company with a proven track record. ( Beware of ‘ bakkie ’ type builders and fly by night companies.)
Insist on a written proposal and examine it for a complete description of the work being carried out, and ensure that the work is being carried out according to the Manufacturers specifications.
Check to see if the company is a member of any industry organisations, that may be of assistance to the client if problems arise.( eg. Master Builders Association, NHBRC, Waterproofing Association of Gauteng ).
Request the details of the Project Supervisor, how many workers will be required, and the estimated duration of the project.
Carefully read and understand the Proposal. Keep a healthy scepticism about the lowest proposal. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Look out for waterproofing contractors who seal broken tiles and ridges, instead of replacing them with new, according to the manufacturers specifications. Sealing tiles and ridges, requires regular maintenance, and this ends up costing a lot more in the long term.
